Was stopped from appearing in UGC NET exam due to hijab, claims Jamia student

Umaiyah Khan, a student at Jamia Milia Islamia University, has alleged that she was not allowed to appear for UGC-NET examination because of her hijab.  

Umaiyah is currently studying MBA from Jamia Milia Islamia University.

She took to Twitter to express her grief and anger about the incident and wrote, "It clearly says in Constitution that we are free to follow any religion yet this chauvinistic government servants didn’t let me appear in my NETJRF 20 Dec 2018 exam because I was convincing them to let me cover my head and it’s in my religion."

Umaiyah, 23, in her tweet alleged that officials conducting NET did not allow her to appear for the exams after she refused to take off her hijab.

As per reports, Umaiyah's centre was located in Rohini area and the exam was supposed to start at 2 pm. She reached the exam centre at 1 pm. But the invigilators (male and female included) didn't allow Umaiyah to sit in exam wearing hijab. Umaiyah has now knocked the doors of National Commission for Minorities and other organizations with her complaint.

Another woman in Goa accused officials of not allowing her to appear for the examination after she refused to take off her hijab. Safina Khan Soudagar alleged that when she arrived at the examination centre in Panaji on December 18, the supervisor there asked her to remove her hijab. When she refused to do so, he did not allow her to sit for the test, Soudagar told mediapersons in Panaji.

Soudagar said she reached the exam centre at 1 pm on Tuesday and stood in the queue when the process of checking the identity cards (IDs) of candidates began. "When I reached the inspecting official, he looked at my documents, he looked at me and asked me to remove my headscarf, saying I will not be allowed inside the examination hall with it," she said. The woman then told the official that she cannot remove the scarf as it is "against her religious belief". 

College and university students are appearing for NET for  award  of Junior Research Fellowship from December 18 till December 22.
