Uttar Pradesh: Husband rips open pregnant woman's stomach to know gender; arrested

A labourer in Uttar Pradesh, father of five daughters, allegedly ripped open the stomach of his pregnant wife on Saturday.

The labourer, named Pannalal, returned home drunk and then got into an argument with his wife. He then proceeded to slit the stomach of his wife with a sharp-edged weapon to find out the gender of the baby, the police stated.

The victim has been shifted to a Bareilly hospital in critical condition by the family of the woman with the help of locals.

The family had alleged that the accused wanted a son and committed the gruesome act to know the gender of the child.

According to the police, he got into an argument with her wife in an inebriated condition and forced her to abort the child.   

SP (City) Pravin Singh Chauhan told a news agency that the incident took place in the Nekpur locality under the Civil Lines police station area.

The labourer has been arrested.

Further investigation is underway to clearly determine the motive of the crime.
