In the midst of the ongoing row regarding the G20 invitations with the ‘President of Bharat’ header issued to foreign officials, the Opposition has claimed that Centre is planning to rename India to Bharat in an effort to one-up the INDIA alliance.

While renaming India to Bharat can be on the cards, it could cost the central government heavily to call India ‘Bharat’ officially. According to a recent calculation published by Outlook India, the whopping cost of renaming India to Bharat can be over Rs 14,000 crore.

According to a report published by Outlook India, the cost of renaming India to Bharat can be as big as the rebranding of any major MNC. This calculation has been derived from the renaming of a South African country a few years ago.

In 2018, a small African country called Swaziland was renamed to Eswatini. The purpose behind renaming the country was to end the colonial connotation behind the name. As per reports, the renaming of the country cost around USD 60 million, which comes out to over Rs 498 crore in Indian currency.

As per Outlook, a South African lawyer called Danner Olivier said that the cost of renaming a country can be measured by applying a similar financial model of rebranding a major company, which will cost up to 10 percent of the overall marketing budget of the firm.

If a similar model is applied to India, the cost of renaming the country to Bharat can be as high as Rs 14,300 crore. This cost is calculated after analyzing the overview of renaming several states in India.

According to an old India Today report, the government estimates show that the cost of renaming Allahabad to Prayagraj was approximately Rs 300 crore. Going on the similar lines, the cost of rebranding India as Bharat could be heavy on the pockets of the taxpayers.
