In the midst of the rising tensions between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, India ended up suspending the visa services for Canadians but Ottawa has taken no such step, knowing that it can majorly hurt their economy and business.

Indian citizens – especially migrating students – seem to be a major driving force behind the economy of Canada over the last few decades. While lakhs of Indians have PRs and have turned taxpayers in Canada, thousands of students leave India every year for their higher studies in Canada, investing crores.

As the row over the escalating Khalistan movement supporters in Canada has touched a nerve in India, the influx of Indian students seen by the country is still going steady, with Punjab contributing to the most amount of student migrating from the country.

While only looking at Punjab, youngsters migrating from the state to Canada have been contributing Rs 68,000 crore every year to the country’s economy which has now slowly become the hub of Khalistani activities.

Canada remains the top choice for higher studies not just for Punjabis, but for students all across north India, due to its flexibility, easy admission, higher work opportunities and pay scale. Data also revealed that 60 percent of all Indian students going to Canada are Punjabis, with the state being a major revenue boost for educational institutes.

Last year, around 1.36 lakh Punjabi students were studying in Canada, all paying an average of 17,000 Canadian dollars in tuition fees to educational institutes, which roughly comes out to be over Rs 10.31 lakhs per year, not including living expenses.

However, the appeal of Canadian education has also seen a rising scam in India, where students are entrapped by corrupt agencies who fabricate documents and provide false visas. Due to this, hundreds of Indian students have been facing deportation from Canada.
