The G20 Summit 2023 under India's presidency, a 2-day event hosted by PM Modi in New Delhi on September 9-10, will see several heads of state of the world's largest economies engage in crucial discussions.
The G20 Summit 2023 will kick off under India’s presidency in New Delhi on Saturday, September 9. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host heads of state including US President Joe Biden, UK PM Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron at the new state-of-the-art summit venue Bharat Mandapam at the national capital’s Pragati Maidan.
A major talking point in the run-up to the big event has been the absence of China President Xi Jinping and Russia President Vladimir Putin. Both major leaders have decided to skip the New Delhi G20 Summit.
While the official summit kicks off today, PM Modi held three bilateral meetings on Friday - with US President Joe Biden, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and Mauritius PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. Significant outcomes of the bilateral meetings include India and US resolving the last World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute over poultry products.
Biden reaffirmed US support for India's bid to land a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Meanwhile, India and Bangladesh signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) including one on Digital Cooperation and one on renewing the Cultural Exchange Program between the neighbouring countries.
G20 Summit 2023 Day-1: What to expect?
A number of heads of state arrived on Friday and several others arrived throughout the night. Saturday will begin with a ceremonial welcome of the leaders followed by the inaugural session of the G20 summit which will continue till lunch, G-20 Special Secretary Muktesh Pardeshi said.
PM Modi will host a working lunch which will follow free time when state heads may hold bilateral meetings. A second session will then start and continue until evening. Post the evening session, there will again be some free time for bilateral meetings.
President Draupadi Murmu will then host the dignitaries for a state dinner at around 8 pm. The dinner will also include a cultural program and instrumental musical program displaying India's diverse musical journey through classical and folk music, Pardeshi added.
