In a freak accident, a 30-year-old sailor suffered an injury today on board INS Tir, a training ship while it was casting off from Kochi harbour, resulting in amputation below the ankle.

The Navy said that leading Seaman Arun Hari suffered the injury due to parting of berthing rope, which became taut due to a sudden gust of wind, resulting in his foot getting caught in the rope and causing amputation below the ankle.

"He was immediately given first aid to arrest the bleeding and shifted to INHS Sanjivani for treatment, where his condition is presently stable,"the Navy said in a release.

The Navy said it planned for the sailor to undergo reconstructive surgery at Amrita hospital to reattach the foot Hari belongs to Kottayam district of Kerala and is married.

The Navy said the incident was being investigated further.
