Five persons died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Kamlapur village on UP-Haryana border in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh in the last 48 hours.

Three persons were killed on Tuesday while two died on Wednesday. About a dozen people are admitted in different private and government hospitals in Shamli and Karnal (Haryana) districts. Villagers allege that victims had consumed country-made liquor.

The District Magistrate Shamli, Indra Vikram Singh, has ordered an inquiry into the hooch tragedy. The Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar said that they had received the information about hooch tragedy in the village on Tuesday morning over Dial 100.

“When we reached the village, family members denied deaths due to consumption of country-made liquor. Two of the victim’s family members claimed that they died due to heart attack and refused to go for the post-mortem examination when the police insisted to ascertain the cause of death,” said the SP, Shamli.

Those who died on Tuesday included Joga Singh (50), Indrapal Singh (55) and Sanjay Singh (28). The victims’ families even refused to lodge any complaint with the police. The DM said that the village borders Haryana and the victims may have consumed the spurious liquor in Karnal as a few of them are admitted there also. He did not rule out smuggling of illicit liquor from Haryana due to cheaper rates.

Vinod Nirwal, a Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader, however, claimed that he had lodged many complaints in the past about the sale of illicit liquor and smuggling from Haryana but no action was initiated resulting in the death of five persons. “The racket was on with the protection by the police and the excise department officials. The toll may increase as the condition of a few others admitted in private hospitals is serious,” he said,

“We have ordered a probe and sought a detailed report from the District Excise Officer. Bodies of the two who died Wednesday morning have been sent for post-mortem examination to confirm deaths due to poisonous liquor,” said the DM, Indra Vikram Singh, assuring action against those found guilty.
