DNA EXCLUSIVE: Election Commission mutes poll candidates' caller tunes, ringtones to curb advertisements in Rajasthan

Rajasthan Election department has directed telecom companies not to allow political parties and their candidates to advertise their agenda through caller tunes and ringtones without certification from the Election Authority.

The directions were issued by Additional Chief Electoral Officer Dr Jogaram on Friday at a meeting involving representatives of Reliance Telecommunications, BSNL, Tata Indicom, Vodafone, Airtel and Aircell. The agenda was adherence of Supreme Court guidelines on advertisement related to campaigning, dated April 15, 2004.

The guidelines restrict any political party, candidate or any individual from advertising without consent from election authorities.

As mobile caller tunes and ringtones are the easiest mode to reach masses, many aspirants have adopted this medium. Election authorities were informed of this thorough complaints and they convened a meeting with telecom companies.

"In adherence to the guidelines, caller tunes, ringtones and SMS will not be allowed by the companies without seeking a certification from the election body. If any individual, party or candidate indulges in such practices, the commission will take legal action against them," said Dr Jogaram.

The Additional CEO accepted that the Commission has received multiple complaints related to such advertisements. "It should be checked immediately. The companies should also ensure that such advertisements do not get transmitted from other states in the form of tunes," said Dr Jogaram.
