Tension gripped the Line of Control (LOC) on Saturday when an army major was killed while defusing a powerful mine planted by intruders in the Naushera sector of Rajouri district in the Jammu division.

The incident occurred two days after Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed suicide bomber rammed his vehicle into a CRPF convoy leaving more than 42 soldiers dead and dozens injured at Lethpora in Pulwama district in South Kashmir.

The fresh incident occurred at about 3 pm when a mine planted on the track near LoC exploded causing serious injuries to Major Chitresh Singh Bisht. He was immediately shifted to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

"Mines were detected during santisation of track in Naushera sector. Major Bisht, leading the bomb disposal team, defused one of the mines successfully. While neutralising another mine, the device got activated and the officer suffered grievous injuries and attained martyrdom," said Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand, defence spokesperson at Jammu.

Hailing from Dehradun in Uttarakhand, 31-year-old Major Bisht is survived by his parents.

"Major Bisht was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty," said Lieutenant Colonel Anand.

This is the second major explosion on the LoC in the last one month. A massive improvised explosive device (IED) rocked the Line of Control (LoC) killing a major and a rifleman in Naushera sector of Jammu division on January 11.

Crossborder firing

In a separate incident, Pakistan violated the ceasefire and fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward posts in the Nouhsera sector on Saturday. Indian army swung into action and retaliated in equal measure to Pakistani guns.

"At about 4 pm, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation along LoC by firing of small arms in Naushera Sector. Indian Army is retaliating strongly and effectively", said Lieutenant Colonel Anand.

Official figures reveal that Pakistan carried out 1,599 ceasefire violations (CFV) along the Line of Control (LoC) in which 20 security force personnel were killed in 2018.

More than 109 people including 35 army soldiers and 21 BSF personnel were killed while 565 people were injured including 302 civilians and 263 security force personnel in crossborder firing between January 2016 and July 2018.
