Within a week of beating up a youth inside a police station, Alipurduar District Magistrate Nikhil Nirmal has been removed by the West Bengal state government.
A video of Nirmal beating up Binod Kumar Sarkar inside Falakata Police Station on Saturday evening went viral. Sarkar, a facebook friend of Nirmal's wife Nandini Krishnan, had made some indecent comments about her on social media after which the incident happened.
According to a notification from the state personnel and administrative reforms department of West Bengal on Thursday, Nirmal had been relieved from his post and had been made the Managing Director of West Bengal Tribal Development Cooperative Cooperation Ltd, which is a relatively less important post. Nirmal has been replaced by Subhanjan Das who was the Additional Secretary of the state Health and Family Welfare Department.
A senior Nabanna official said the removal would have been done sooner but since voters' list preparation is on, the permission of the Election Commission of India (ECI) was necessary before Nirmal could be removed. "His removal order was issued as soon as the green signal from ECI was obtained," the official said.
Within minutes of making the comments, Sarkar was detained by Falakata PS officials and Nirmal, in the presence of Nandini and the officer in charge of the police station, slapped him left and right. The video also showed Nirmal saying, "No one will speak against me in my district," and "If I can bring you to a police station in half an hour, I can kill you at your home." Officials of the PS also drew a lot of flak as watched the entire episode and did not intervene.
Later in a separate post, Nandini, lauded the action of her husband. 'If you want to remove him, remove him. But do not disturb a family man. Yes we have slapped and kicked the man. Any other person would have killed such men. My husband told me during marriage that he will take care of me… protect me. And he did. I am proud of him,' she wrote.
