Sources says that the decision came after a recommendation made by the Ministry of Home Affairs
Amid increasing tensions between India and Pakistan, and the possibility of an attack by a terror outfit, the Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, and the Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, Sunil Lanba, have been provided Z+ security cover by the Delhi Police.
Till now, it was only the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army, Bipin Rawat, who had the privilege of the Z+ security. Sources said that the decision came after a recommendation made by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Keeping in mind the recent development at the border and after air strikes carried out by the Indian Air Force at a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) infrastructure in Pakistan, a meeting was held to ensure the safety of the top brass on Wednesday. Various terror inputs of possible attacks were also received by the intelligence agencies.
"The security arrangements in respect of Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral, Sunil Lanba, has been examined in the ministry. It has been decided to provide them Z+ category security in the central List. Delhi Police is therefore requested to provide Z+ category security to Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa and Admiral Sunil Lanba immediately, under intimation to the ministry," said a MHA letter.
According to the protocol of the Z+ security, 45 people are rotated in a shift system. There are three shifts, which means that at any given point in time, there are 15 personnel guarding the person. This category of security includes six personal security officers (one civil and one uniform PSO round-the-clock), 3-9 escorts (1-3 round-the-clock), 3-9 pilots (1-3 round-the-clock), 5+1 screening team (1 round-the-clock, 1 during the day until the last program), six persons on spot (two round-the-clock) and three liaison officers (1 round-the-clock). Besides this, depending on the topography of the residence, 2-8 armed guards are also deployed at the residence.
