A minister in the cabinet of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came out to indicate that the state police did not do a proper job in the case of the gang-rape and murder of a 20-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras.

The minister's remarks come a few days after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against the four accused of the crime.

The UP Minister of State for Labour, Sunil Bharala, said that the state government was always standing with the family.

NDTV quoted Bharala as saying, "Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had decided the CBI should take over the case. He also did not trust that police will do their job well. It's not like all police officers are good. Saare police officers doodh ke dhule huye nahin hai (All police officers are not as pure as a saint)... Right from Day 1 Yogi Adityanath ji has been with the family."

The CBI charged the four accused last week of gang-rape and murder as well as invoked charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against them.

The 20-year-old Dalit woman was raped by four men of a so-called upper caste on September 14 in a village in Hathras. The victim later died of her injuries at a Delhi hospital. The police cremated her against her family's wishes allegedly late night on September 30.

The UP police had come under scrutiny for its handling of the sensitive case, especially on its action of cremating the victim in this manner. It triggered protests among various groups across the country. The police countered that the cremation was carried out according to her family's wishes.

The Supreme Court of India in October said that the Allahabad High Court would monitor the investigation being conducted into the case by the CBI.
