Michael Gambon who is best known for playing the role of Dumbledore in Harry Potter films passes away at 82
Michael Gambon best known for portraying the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films, passed away at 82 following a bout of pneumonia. The actor's family confirmed the news.
Born in Dublin, Michael Gambon in TV, film, theatre, and radio in his six-decade career and also won 4 Bafta awards. His wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus Gambon said in a statement, “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.”
The actor was suffering from pneumonia and died in the hospital on September 28. The statement further added, “We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
Sir Michael took on the role of Dumbledore - headmaster of wizarding school Hogwarts - in the hit Harry Potter series, based on JK Rowling's novels, after the death of Richard Harris in 2003. Other than Harry Porter, Sir Michael Gambon also played a French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series Maigret and was also known for his role as Philip Marlow in Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective on the BBC. The actor last appeared on stage in 2012 in a London production of Samuel Beckett's play All That Fall.
Gambon married Anne Miller in 1962 and had a child, Fergus, in 1964. Fergus, who was schooled in part by his father, appeared as an expert on the BBC version of Antiques Roadshow. In 2002, Michael Gambon moved out of the home that he shared with his wife in Kent and later introduced Philippa Hart as his girlfriend. Other than his son Fergus, he is also survived by Hart and two young sons by her, Michael, born in 2007, and William in 2009.
