Those who celebrate Holi need no excuse to be the first ones out in the streets smearing their friends, loved ones with the colourful powders and water. More competitive ones will have their water guns and water balloons ready.

But it is possible that the colours will have an adverse effect on your skin, hair or eyes.

So do curb your enthusiasm a little to know what experts say you can do to take care of yourself.

Dermatologist Dr Yuti C Nakhwa suggests following do's

1. Use herbal colours. They are gentle on your skin

2. Either apply coconut oil or aloe vera gel  before you step out to play with the colours

3. Sunscreen can be a good substitute if you are not keen on applying oil

4. After you are done playing, take a long shower and scrub out the colour.

5. After the shower, if any spot on your skin is itching, apply some ice on it followed by Calimine lotion.

Eye specialist Dr S Natarajan tells you the no-no's while celebrating Holi.

1. Do not use artificial, chemically enhanced colours. They could damage your eyes.

2. Do not throw colour in someone's eye or mouth

3. Don't hurl water balloons. Their impact can be damaging to eyes and skin.
