While many young girls prefer traditional chaniya cholis, some opt for halter cholis and sequinned lehengas, reports Shivani Gala

After bidding adieu to the elephant-headed God — it is time to gear up for the next festival of the year — Navratri. Young and old look forward to the nine rocking evenings when they can socialise, dance and celebrate. Youngsters in the city are already preparing for the grand fest.

If you are part of the enthusiastic lot, you can step up your style quotient for the most dazzling and musical festival with the new crystal doris, gotta laces, light shells and more that have already found space in the city shops. This is one festival where you can mix and match ethnic costumes with ease.

Pallavi Anand, proprietor of Kkhushi Kreations reveals, “People are still hooked on to the Jodhaa Akbar look. I have clients asking for tissue and satin material with broad laces on their lehengas and dupattas. The typical batik and bandhni prints are also in demand. People still prefer to tread the traditional path following the release of the film.
So, this time around, one will notice men and women donning the royal and elegant look.” Heavily embroidered lehengas are teamed up with beautiful dupattas in transparent fabrics with few sequins on it.

Look out for halter cholis too. Farhat Adan, owner of a city boutique says, “Many like to mix the old and new trends and hence they choose halters. The garments look chic, peppy and ethnic, all at the same time. People also like to wear backless cholis during the festival as they are comfortable and lend a contemporary look. Those who find the chaniya-cholis a big headache can opt for halter-neck tops or cup-sleeved tops with jeans and capris.”

Women who like to wear kurtis can also team up a stole to add the right touch of elegance to the outfit. After all, the festival speaks about style and grace. Fashion gurus in the city recommend crushed stoles, that can lend a trendy look to the evening.

While most people prefer to get their outfits designed, there are a few traditional households which like to design the outfits themselves with the help of accessories like mirrors, shells, crystals, etc. While speaking about her preparations for Navratri, Namrata Shah, says, “I bought a plain chaniya choli with a bandhni print and got mirrors, stones, sequins and shells stitched over it. We will need another two weeks to
complete it.”

Further, a new material called patra has caught people’s attention. Much lighter, it is a rage among youngsters. So catch hold of your designer and grab your outfit to make a mark this Navratri and stand out in the crowd.
