Television anchor Pooja Bedi reveals how she balances her duties as a single mother along with male companionship.
Their father, my friend
My kids Aalia (9) and Umer (7) are the centre of my existence and they know it. I share a wonderful relationship with their father (Farhan Furniturewala). There’s no animosity. This makes my children emotionally stable. The four of us go out for lunches and even holidays together.
Minding my men
Where my relationships are concerned, I’m extremely wary of people who try to win my children’s affections to reach me. That would eventually cause them emotional confusion and shock if they were to disappear one fine day. I’m a single mom, who has a home, work and media glare to handle. So I am extremely cautious about my love life. Hence, it’s important that the man is a good human being first. Fortunately, I’ve had relationships with wonderful people.
More to love
My children are open-minded. Two years ago Aalia wished me to have another baby. She kept saying, “Look around, get married!” I thought, perhaps, she wanted me to get back with her father. When I suggested that, she retorted, “You’ve married papa, and divorced him. Can’t you see anybody else?” My father (actor Kabir Bedi) married three times. We saw it as ‘more people to love’.
Time out
Leaving my children behind when I’ve to go out has never been an issue. I’ve never been a sit-at-home mom. Besides my mother-in-law is wonderful and helps me out. My kids and I’ve worked out a barter system – Mum sleeps with them one night and goes out another. My kids are not lonely. They’ve many friends and activities - academics, art classes and gymnastics. When I’m with them, we have great fun - making pancakes, laughing, cuddling, giggling, or just frisking in bed. They’re cocooned in love.
