Those who grew up in the 1980s would remember Anant Pai and his illustrated tales from Indian mythology. And though the man who pioneered Amar Chitra Katha is no more, one of the stories from the comic series has been given a new lease of life. Sons of Ram: Heroes Will Rise is the film adaption of Pai’s The Sons of Rama.

The movie chronicles the adventures of Luv and Kush, the sons of Lord Ram and Sita, who are unknowingly abandoned by their father when he banishes their then pregnant mother from the kingdom. What follows is a story we have heard several times — of how the twins are raised under the guidance of sage Valmiki, how they valiantly take on their father’s army when it tries to usurp the land on which their ashram stands and how the family is reunited briefly before Sita asks Mother Earth to swallow her.

And though the film tries its best to be engaging, it has nothing exciting to offer younger audiences who have not spent hours poring over every Amar Chitra Katha they could lay their hands on. Only die-hard fans of the series may be interested in this retelling which is somewhat entertaining and even politically correct at times.

The animation is decent but we have seen better visuals in similar indigenous films released recently. Also, the 3D effect does not add much value to the overall experience. Watch it only if you are feeling nostalgic about those simpler times when the only pastime one had was flipping through stacks of comics.
