Film insurance is at its nascent stage in India. In the West, most big and small productions get their films insured but back home, industry estimates say that only 5-10% of all films get an insurance cover. But every once in a while, a filmmaker embarks on a film so ambitious that a big insurance cover becomes essential. That is exactly what happened a few years ago when a pan-India film broke all records with an insurance cover that dwarfed even the collections of most films.

The most expensive insurance for an Indian film

In 2016, Shankar’s 2.0, starring Rajinikanth set a record with an insurance cover of Rs 330 crore. A report in Business Insider stated that people involved in writing the policy said that New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance and United India Insurance were underwriting the production. With this, the film surpassed the insurance cover of Rs 300 crore for Rajkumar Hirani’s PK, which starred Aamir Khan.

Tamil films usually do not even gross Rs 330 crore, let alone spend that much on insurance. For instance, the two biggest stars in Tamil cinema – Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar – have never given a film that has grossed more than this. Vijay’s Varisu earned Rs 306 crore while Ajith’s Thunivu grossed Rs 223 crore. Even Bollywood star Akshay Kumar’s highest-grossing film as a lead actor – Good Newwz – earned Rs 318 crore, less than 2.0’s insurance cover.

2.0 box office collection

2.0 was a sequel to Rajinikanth’s Enthiran (also released as Robot) and was a massive success at the box office. The film, which also starred Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson, was released in theatres in 2018 after several delays. The film earned Rs 744 crore worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. The Hindi version alone netted Rs 190 crore in India, surpassing several Bollywood films at the time.
