Kushaldan could not have imagined in his wildest dreams that his son would one day ace the toughest examination in the country and become a coveted IAS officer. Son of a tea seller in Rajasthan’s Sumalai village, Deshal Dan Charan stunned one and all when he bagged the All India Rank of 82 in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) CSE 2017 exam.

Deshal’s father took loans to educate him, not letting his own financial struggle affect the boy’s future. Despite the lack of higher education institutions in the area, Deshal becoming an Indian Administrative Services officer is a celebrated feat.

It was Deshal’s dream since childhood to become an IAS officer. His father Kushaldan owned small farmland and made ends meet for his family of 10 by selling tea. Deshal was a quick learner and a bright student. Despite the lack of financial resources and no formal coaching, Deshal continued to prepare for the civil services exam on his own.

Deshal aced the exam at the age of 24 and came among the toppers for the year. One of Deshal’s seven siblings joined the Indian Navy. He was a constant source of inspiration for Deshal to crack UPSC.
