10 ways to join the Indian Army as an officer

Becoming an officer in the Indian Army is considered one of the most respected and prestigious professions. Serving the nation as an Army Officer is a dream that lakhs of Indians aspire for every year.

Individuals join the Indian Army as officers at the Lieutenant rank and then earn their stripes over the years to progress to Captain, Major, Lt Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Lt General and General.

The Indian Army has a website joinindianarmy.nic.in to help aspirants join as an Officer or Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) or Other Rank based on the qualifications and aptitude of individuals.

As listed on the website, aspirants can join the Indian Army as an officer via 10 different modes. Mentioned below are the different ways along with the age and educational qualification criteria for each mode to join Indian Army as an officer.

  1. National Defence Academy: NDA vacancies arrive for 300 candidates twice a year with 195 joining the Indian Army. An NDA aspirant should be between 16.5 years to 19.5 years in age with educational qualification of 10+2.
  2. 10+2 Tech Entry Scheme: This type of entry is through 85 vacancies twice a year. The applicants should be 16.5 to 19.5 years in age and 10+2 pass with 70% marks with Physics, Chemistry, Maths (PCM).
  3. Indian Military Academy (Non-Tech): The Indian Army recruits 250 candidates twice a year. Applicants should be between 19 and 24 years and a graduate from a recognised university.
  4. Short Service Commission (Non-Tech): There are 175 vacancies per course twice a year with applicants needing to be aged between 19 and 25 years and a graduate from a recognised university.
  5. Short Service Commission (Tech Men & Women): There are 50 vacancies per course twice a year with the age requirement between 19 and 27 years and educational qualification of BE/BTech stream of Engineering/B. Arch, MSC Computer.
  6. NCC Special (Men & Women): With 50 vacancies per course twice a year, NCC Special age criteria is 19 to 25 years with education qualification of graduation with LLB / LLM with 50% aggregate marks and 2 years of service in National Cadet Corps (NCC) Senior Division Army with minimum 'B' Grade in 'C' Certificate Exam.
  7. TGC Education (AEC): The Technical Graduate Course for Army Education Corps Entry requires applicants to be between 23 to 27 years and have an MA / MSC in 1st or 2nd division in notified subjects from recognised university.
  8. Universal Entry Scheme (UES): For this entry with 60 vacancies per course, candidates have to be 19 to 25 years for Final Year and 18 to 24 years for Pre-Final Year for students in Engineering Degree Course.
  9. TGC (Engineers): The Indian Army comes out with vacancies as notified, twice a year for aspirants between 21 and 27 years with BE / B. Tech in notified streams of Engineering/ B. Arch, MSc computer.
  10. JAG (Men & Women): The Judge Advocate General entry requires applicants to be between 21 and 27 years of age and Law Graduate (LLB) with 55% marks and registered with Bar Council of India/ State.
