Republic Day: 20,000 cops, high-tech equipment to guard Rajpath

Around 20,000 security personnel will stand guard at the main event at the Rajpath and adjoining areas. The massive security preparations began weeks ahead of the national event.

The Delhi Police has roped in reserve police force as well as the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel to ensure a full-proof security for the Republic Day functions in the national capital. High-tech face recognition cameras and anti-aircraft guns have been installed at key points in view of intelligence inputs regarding the possibility of terror strikes during the Republic Day celebrations. 

Around 20,000 security personnel will stand guard at the main event at the Rajpath and adjoining areas. The massive security preparations began weeks ahead of the national event.

Special face recognition cameras that will be used for the first time to keep an eye on suspicious people and activities have been installed at important points along the Rajpath.

"We are using counter-drone technology to thwart any attack or identify any suspicious flying objects," said an official with reference to securing the airspace that may be used to launch a drone attack.

Airspace restrictions will also be imposed as the fly-pasts by the IAF jets is a part of the R-Day parade. Areas around central Delhi, Connaught Place, Paharganj and other places with heavy footfall are under strict surveillance of the police and other agencies.

The security agencies held a meeting with the people from establishments around the parade route so as to ensure their cooperation in providing maximum security to the event.

High-rise buildings around India Gate and the parade route will be secured by the security agencies while personnel including snipers are likely to be be mounted at important locations to further bolster the security and vigil.

Swat units of the Delhi police and the Parakram, an anti-terror squad, have been deployed at vital locations in the city including places with heavy footfall to tackle and thwart any kind of terror strike.

The police patrolling has been intensified whereas CISF and Railway Police have intensified security checks of passengers and visitors at the railway and metro stations while security has been tightened at the interstate bus stations.
