Delhi violence: PM Modi appeals to maintain peace and brotherhood

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister said he had held an extensive review of the situation prevailing in various parts of the city, and agencies were working on the ground to restore normalcy.

In his first remarks on the violence in northeast Delhi that has killed at least 22 people till now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed to people of the national capital to maintain peace and calm in the region.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister said he had held an extensive review of the situation prevailing in various parts of the city, and agencies were working on the ground to restore normalcy.

"Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy," he said.

Modi also insisted stressed that peace and harmony are important to our ethos and it is important that normalcy is restored in the region at the earliest.

"Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest," said another tweet.

His remarks come less than an hour after Congress president Sonia Gandhi held a press conference and attacked the top leadership of the country, saying that it was 'shocking' to see Delhi Police's silence on the violence.

"Delhi Police has remained paralysed in the last 72 hrs-around 18 lives have been lost so far, including a head constable,&hundreds are in hospital, many with gunshot injuries. Violence continues unabated on the streets of North East Delhi," Gandhi said.

The Congress president also demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

"The Centre and the Union Home Minister is responsible for the present situation in Delhi. The Union Home Minister should resign," she added.

At least 21 people have died and over 200 injured have been injured in the past three days after violence broke out between anti-CAA and pro-CAA protesters in north-east Delhi. Security forces on Wednesday conducted flag marches in the area.
