Delhi police to reward cop who was also a beauty pageant finalist

From leading the NCC team during the Republic Day parade to reaching the finals of Mrs India Earth, this New Delhi-based policewoman has been engaged in making the world a better place and getting the most out of life.

Oinam Shilla Chanu's department has announced a cash prize for her social welfare activities. Chanu works as a Delhi police executive constable and is posted at a women's help desk, where she assists widows, domestic violence victims and other women in need fill forms, get access to advocates, among other things.

This is her work during duty hours. On Sundays, she uses her education and soft skills to help underprivileged students and women get proper education and learn basic social skills.

"On Sundays, I make sure that children and women living in places such as JJ clusters, get proper education. I also educate them about things like table manners, English-speaking and body language basics," said Chanu, who had been a finalist in Mrs India Earth 2018.

Chanu had taken part in the beauty pageant in 2018 but feared that her colleagues might not approve of her decision. However, to her surprise, her seniors were positive about it and encouraged her to go ahead with the contest.

For her dedication towards social service, Chanu credits her police training and her background in NCC, which taught her the importance of empathy.

"People often consider police personnel as stone-hearted, but we all are trained to make sure that we understand other's pain and help them," added Chanu.

Her contribution towards community service, along with her dedication towards her job, will be rewarded by her department as Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Devesh Srivastav announced a cash prize. "We have decided to motivate our officers who are working hard for the society. Chanu will be rewarded very soon," said Srivastava.
