Delhi Capitals' (DC) young brigade couldn't hold their emotions back after a heartbreaking loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the second qualifier of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Sharjah on Wednesday. Prithvi Shaw was lying on the ground and couldn't control his tears and skipper Rishabh Pant was speechless when he was called for the post-match interview.
In what was a splendid campaign for the Capitals where they topped the table with 10 wins in 14 games, it came to a screeching halt in the playoffs as they lost to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the first qualifier in the last over and couldn't go past KKR in the second as the men in purple's smashing form in the second half hit them like a truck.
After losing the toss, the Capitals batted first but their innings couldn't get going. After a few good overs in the powerplay, the KKR spinners strangled the DC batting line-up in the middle overs as they weren't able to find boundaries and it was a struggle for them throughout the innings. Shimron Hetmyer and Shreyas Iyer hit some lusty blows in the end but 135 wasn't enough.
Even if it was, KKR openers broke the back of the chase with a 96-run opening partnership. DC bowlers came back getting six wickets for seven runs but Rahul Tripathi got KKR home and for Delhi, it was so near yet so far.
After the loss, the youngsters of DC were just shattered and the fans couldn't see Indian players crying after a heartbreaking finish.
