Ronnie Screwvala is regarded as one of the top film producers and entrepreneurs in the country, but not many people know that he is also the man behind India’s top edtech platform upGrad, which he founded after teaming up with young graduates from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
Ronnie Screwvala is often remembered for his contributions to cinema and television since he is the man behind the UTV media conglomerate, which also started a movie studio, but not many know that he was the founder of upGrad, which has now turned into a billion-dollar company.
The film producer and entrepreneur founded upGrad by teaming up with three IIT graduates – Mayank Kumar, Phalgum Kompalli, and Ravijot Chug. The online education company was founded in 2015 and now has a valuation of over USD 2.25 billion.
Screwvala, teaming up with the IIT graduates, established upGrad as a platform where people can seek their higher educational degrees, specializing in Data Analytics, Digital Marketing and more courses. The platform has also teamed up with several colleges, including MICA.
In a recent round of fundraising, upGrad Chairman Ronnie Screwvala ended up investing Rs 212 crore into the company, taking its valuation higher. Currently, upGrad is valued at USD 2.25 billion, which comes out to over Rs 18,690 crore.
Apart from having a varied business portfolio, be it upGrad or UTV, Ronnie Screwvala is also a notable Bollywood producer, with dozens of hits on his hands. His most recent works as a producer include Lust Stories 2, Dhamaka and The Sky Is Pink.
Some of the most iconic and cult classic films and TV shows by Ronnie Screwvala are Rang De Basanti, Fashion, A Wednesday, Shaka Laka Boom Boom, and Khichdi. Ronnie Screwvala, who started out with a toothbrush business and soon became a successful entrepreneur, now has a net worth of over Rs 12,800 crore.
