Shriram EPC, Chennai based construction company, is looking at bidding for projects in the power balance of plant (BoP) space, its senior vice-president S Ramnath said.
He said the company is setting up a team and will bid for BoP projects in three months.
Balance of plant is the sum of all the equipment for the safe operation as well as the technical coordination of all concerned parts of a power plant, which include coal handling, cooling tower, light & power installation, cables, etc. The main power plant includes boiler, turbine and generator (BTG).

Shriram EPC is already doing some turnkey work in the power space, with about Rs 250 crore in bio-mass and Rs 50 crore in an 80 megawatt thermal power plant. The bio-mass projects are being developed by its subsidiary, Orient Green Power Private (OGPP), which generates power through renewable sources such as bio-gas and wind energy.
Shriram EPC’s order-book stands at about Rs 2,000 crore, of which steel, bio-mass and water projects form about 20% each.

Construction companies are most bullish on the power segment, followed by highways and urban development. India is targeting a power capacity addition of 78,577 mw during the Eleventh Five-Year plan (2007-12) but there is likely to be a shortfall. Ramnath said, “The expertise required for BoP projects is different from that of the main plant so we are working on it.” DNA Money had on October 1 reported that the New Delhi-based Era Infra Engineering was looking to soon bid for BoP projects.
