Nirav Modi, who has escaped from India following the Punjab National Bank Fraud, is believed to have escaped to Brussels following reports that he was in London seeing political asylum from the United Kingdom.

According to a Times of India report, the Indian high commission in the UK was awaiting formal conformation of his presence in that country from the Theresa May-led government.

The diamond merchant, wanted in India's biggest-ever banking scam, is said to be travelling in and out of the UK freely, possibly on a Singapore passport, not an Indian one.

On Monday, the CBI had requested Interpol for a red corner notice against Nirav Modi and his brother Nishal, a Belgian national. On Tuesday, a special court in Mumbai had issued a non-bailable warrant against the diamantaire and his family members.

Earlier, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) requested the Interpol to send a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Nirav Modi's brother Nishal.

This comes two days after the CBI sought the same for the billionaire businessman and his uncle-cum-business-partner, Mehul Choksi.

The investigative agency has also requested an Interpol RCN for Nishal's employee, Suresh Shankar Parab.

As per sources, the CBI has received certain details of the movement of fugitives from the United Kingdom, including Nirav Modi.

For those unversed, the Punjab National Bank (PNB) detected the multi-crore scam, wherein Nirav and his uncle-cum-business-partner Choksi had allegedly cheated the bank to the tune of Rs. 114 billion, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.

The scam, which reportedly began in 2011, was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.
