Days after a fire in Airtel’s Malad data centre disrupted services, MTNL, the state-owned telecom player, on Friday opened its second data centre for Mumbai at Belapur and outlined plans to set up two more centres in Delhi and Chennai.

Set up in partnership with IIT Bombay, the Belapur centre will serve as a disaster recovery back-up for MTNL’s Worli data centre.
The centre, which is 100% fire norms compliant, plans to have stand-by management in the case of a mishap. MTNL now has data centres in two seismic zones, which would be of help in case of any calamity.

A K Garg, chairman and managing director, MTNL, said, “With data usage increasing, we anticipate demand for data centre services to grow exponentially in the near future, and hence are looking at launching our data centres in Delhi and Chennai in the coming months. While the partnership in Delhi has not yet been fixed, in Chennai we will be tying up with STPI (Software Technology Park of India).”

The Belapur data centre has a latency of 10 microseconds to reach multiple customers at any given point of time. It will also offer server and space facilities that include IT and financial services virtualisation and cloud services. These services will be provided to individual corporates and rates will be mutually decided.

Garg also announced that MTNL would roll out its prepaid BlackBerry services in Mumbai from January 15. The company plans to upgrade its 3G services over the next 9-12 months and expand 3G coverage within the year.

On fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), or high-speed broadband services that integrate voice, data and video, MTNL is currently seeking private investment and plans to connect 5,000 homes in Mumbai with FTTH by March.

In a bid to increase its present broadband subscriber base of 5,52,413 users in the city, MTNL has launched four new broadband plans in Mumbai, offering 8-16 GB unlimited downloads at a minimum speed of 2 Mbps. The company is providing a rent-free landline with any of these new plans.
