Meet man who joined Rs 42,069 crore company as management trainee, now heads it as chairman

He completed his graduation in metallurgical engineering from BIT Sindri, Jharkhand.

Amarendu Prakash is an well-known technocrat. He is the current chairman of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a central public sector undertaking (PSU) based in Delhi. He has been leading the largest government-owned steel producer since 31 May 2023. He succeeded Soma Mondal, who retired from the post on April 30, 2023.

Prakash joined SAIL in 1991 as a Management Trainee (Technical). Thereafter, he worked in various positions in the company. Now after over 30 years, he reached the top position of the company. SAIL has a market capitalisation of Rs 42,069 crore as of September 5, 2023. The share price of the company was Rs 101.85 on Tuesday.

Before taking over as chairman of SAIL, Prakash held the post of Director in charge of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), SAIL. He completed his graduation in metallurgical engineering from BIT Sindhri. He was selected as a Director in the SAIL Board in charge of Bokaro Steel Plant in 2020.

He briefly took on additional charge as Director In-Charge of the Rourkela Steel Plant, IISCO and Durgapur Steel Plant. Established in 1973, the company is owned by Government of India (GOI) under the Ministry of Steel. SAIL operates and owns five integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bokaro and Burnpur (Asansol) and three special steel plants at Salem, Durgapur and Bhadravathi.
