Meet IIT, IIM alumnus who heads Rs 48,331 crore company, ex-employee of Tata Group

He had once worked with Tata Steel as Executive Assistant to the Director of Marketing, but now heads Rs 48,331 crore company as CMD.

Nalin Shinghal has over 30 years of experience with various assignments in government, public and private sectors. He is the chairman of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a central public sector undertaking (PSU). It is a Government of India company under the Ministry of Heavy Industries. 

Shinghal has been leading the company since 2019. The PSU has a market capitalisation of Rs 48,331 crore on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) as of September 4, 2023. The share price of the government-owned was Rs 139.30 on Monday.

Shinghal had once worked with Tata Steel as Executive Assistant to the Director of Marketing. He worked there for 2.3 years. Before joining BHEL, he was heading Central Electronics Limited (CEL) as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). He has also worked with IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd) as Director of Tourism and Marketing.  

Shinghal holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi. He also completed a PGD in management from IIM Calcutta. He has been a Commonwealth Scholar and has a doctorate in Transport Economics from the University of Leeds, UK.

As CMD of BHEL, Shinghal has been responsible for putting in place a multi-dimensional transformational strategy for the company. He has also published a number of articles in leading national and international journals in the areas of Transport Economics and Logistics. He has also held eminent positions in various professional bodies and received a number of awards and recognitions.
