Veteran actor and Shabana Azmi's mother Shaukat Kaifi passes away at 93

Umrao Jaan and Salaam Bombay actor Shaukat Kaifi, who also happened to be the mother of veteran actor Shabana Azmi is no more. Aged 93, she passed away due to age-related illness. Son-in-law Javed Akhtar, married to Shabana, confirmed the news.

"She was 93 and she was having one problem after another. She was admitted to Kokikaben Dhirubai Ambani hospital, for certain days she was in the ICU and then she was out of ICU. It was all age related," Javed Akhtar told PTI.

"Ultimately they brought her home. She wanted to come back to her own room she stayed for a day or two and then passed away. Shabana is in Mumbai," the writer-lyricist told the wire agency.

Various Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Rishi Kapoor, Tabu, Urmila Matondkar and others paid their condolences by attending the funeral which was held on Saturday afternoon.

Shaukat Kaifi was married renowned Urdu poet and film lyricist Kaifi Azmi. Apart from Shabana, Kaifi is survived by son Baba Azmi. On the work front, she was last seen in Shaad Ali's 2002 release Saathiya featuring Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi in the lead roles.
