It is not unknown that actress Deepika Padukone is all set to play an acid attack survivor- Laxmi Agarwal in her next project, which is being helmed by Raazi director Meghna Gulzar.

The actress will also make her debut in the field of production with the film which now has a title.

Chhapaak, starring Deepika in the lead, will also see Balika Vadhu fame Vikrant Massey.

The actor who will star opposite the actress in the film.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh announced the film's title on Wednesday and also revealed that actor Vikrant Massey has been roped in to play the male lead. "It's official. Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar join hands. Their first film together is titled Chhapaak, based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Vikrant Massey has been signed to enact the lead opposite Deepika," read Mr Adarsh's tweet.

While talking to Mumbai Mirror about Vikrant’s role, Meghna said, “The cast is slowly coming together. Vikrant is somebody I’ve wanted to work with since Raazi, after seeing him in A Death in the Gunj. In the film, he plays a North Indian boy who used to be a professional before he decided to become an actor, then, started a campaign against acid violence which is how he came to meet Laxmi in real life. I speak for both Deepika and myself when I say that we are both really excited to have Vikrant play this part.”

Vikrant Massey is known face and has worked in several films, including Lootera, Dil Dhadakne Do, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Half Girlfriend and is currently seen in the web series Broken But Beautiful.

Later, the filmmaker disclosed why they chose Chhapaak as the title of the fil.

She told the daily that she and the team were toying with two titles initially- Gandhak (Hindi word for Sulphuric acid) and Chhapaak, but eventually went on with the latter as it strongly resonated with everyone.

“I bounced it off as it conveys that the film is about acid violence almost immediately and quite effortlessly,” she said.

In Chhapaak, Deepika Padukone will be seen in different looks because of the several facial reconstruction surgeries of the character. 

Laxmi was a school student when she was attacked by a man who had proposed her for marriage. 

Meanwhile, the film is expected to go on the floors in March next year.
