A police officer, who did not want to be named, tried to explain the phenomenon. “These leaders forget the days they spent as commoners once they get the taste of power. They become so addicted to a lavish lifestyle that when they finally land themselves in jail, they can’t bear the thought of spending even a night in the cell,” he said.
“These VVIPs know that ordinary health problems can be managed by the jail hospital. So they repeatedly complain of some ‘serious’ health issue which the jail authorities can’t ignore. Hospitals can’t risk it,” another officer said.
On Saturday evening, Lok Ayukta special court sent Yeddyurappa to Parappana Agrahara central jail and he was expected to be there till October 22. He was smiling when he came to court. But once he stepped into the jail, he complained of chest pain and around midnight, he was taken to Jayadeva Hospital.
Katta Subramanya Naidu was sent to Parappana Agrahara on August 8 over the multicrore scam linked to Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board.
From day one itself, he started complaining of health problems. On August 12, he complained of chest pain. First, he was treated in the jail hospital. But on August 21, he was taken to Jayadeva Hospital. Doctors, after some tests, refused to admit him. Then he was taken to Victoria Hospital where he continues being ‘treated’.
Scam-tainted former minister Krishnaiah Shetty collapsed in the court itself when a judge denied him bail on Saturday. He was put on oxygen and brought to the jail.
Sudden health problems are not restricted to politicians alone. Artistes too develop this rare malady, as in the case of actor Darshan. He was hale and hearty till he was arrested for assaulting his wife. Then, he fell ill and was taken to hospital.
