Mayor Bijal Patel, as also the chairperson of VS Hospital Board, on Monday announced the new set up of VS Hospital, comprising 500 beds from the existing 1,200 beds. The board has adopted the resolution with majority in absence of the VS Hospital trustees, who had earlier opposed the move.

The newly-constructed hospital on the VS Hospital premises will have 1,500 beds and the VS Hospital itself will have 500 beds. Also, the chairperson announced that the VS Hospital will now be a non-teaching one and the doctors will be transferred to the new hospital.

Last Friday, a dispute broke among the board members during a meeting.

"A resolution was passed unanimously last Monday at the board meeting. The discussion was about having 500 beds at the hospital. The hospital was established with 120 beds in 1930. Currently, there are 1,200 beds," said mayor Bijal Patel.

According to the municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra, the civic body will recruit new doctors from the Urban Health Society while the doctors practising at the hospital would be transferred to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SVPIMSR). Nehra also said that if needed they will demolish the old structure.

"Some portions of the old building is dilapidated. Instead of going for a complete renovation, we are going to demolish it phase-wise," said Nehra. While asked regarding any court case regarding the dispute between trustees and the AMC authorities, commissioner Nehra denied any such case.
