After spending money on collecting study material, post-graduate students of Gujarat University has demanded printing of textbooks authenticated by the university. In a presentation made by the students along with the National Students Union of India (NSUI) to the university officials, students have demanded the Granth Nirman Board to print textbooks that are easy on their pockets.

Speaking about the issue, Harsh Chauhan, a masters in Library Science student said, "It is during examination that we face the issue of not having an authenticated book by the university. Since we are given a course outline, we follow syllabus of IGNOU, save it as PDF and then take print outs of the same or refer to other books. Many times, we get questions that we have not reffered to. So if we get an university affiliated book, it will be much easier for us."

The NSUI has alleged that the university is spending a lot of money on Granth Nirman Board but it is of no use to the students. NSUI secretary Subhan Saiyad said, "What is the purpose of Granth Nirman Board if the university does not print textbooks. The students are forced to spend money to get print outs of the study material or they have to buy books by private publishers which are expensive."

When DNA contacted Dr Himanshu Pandya, vice-chancellor, Gujarat university, he said, "There cannot be books in post graduation, only suggestive reading and references can be given to students. For a very simple reason that as per UGC mandate, we need to change the syllabus every three years. If university starts publishing books, by the time it is given to students, there would be additions as per syllabus review. But the suggestion by the students can be considered for other subjects like linguistic, art, etc. So we will look into it."
