NIF supported grassroots innovators conferred Padma Shri

Three grassroots innovators from the state supported by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) have been conferred Padma Shri for their contribution in the agriculture sector.

Jagdish Prasad Parikh, Uddhab Kumar Bharali and Vallabhbhai Vasrambhai Marvaniya have been recognised with Padma Shri, which is one of the highest civilian awards in the country.

The Government of India on Friday announced Padma Awards 2019 for various disciplines. The list comprised of 94 Padma Shri awards that included three grassroot innovators.

Jagdish Prasad Parikh, recognised for innovation in agriculture is a recipient of 1st National Grassroots Innovation Awards (2001) for his innovation of a new cauliflower variety.

NIF has conducted validation of the variety at Jaipur and also conducted farm trials at farmers' field in Gujarat, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh.

Whereas Uddhab Kumar Bharali, recognised under the Science & Engineering category is a recipient of 5th National

Grassroots Innovation awards (2009) for his innovations that include pomegranate deseeder, Arecanut peeler and bamboo splitting machine. NIF helped Bharali to file patent and add value to his innovation apart from product development and market research.

For Vallabhbhai Vasrambhai Marvaniya, who is a recipient of 9th National Grassroots Innovation Awards (2017) for his innovation titled 'Madhuvan Gajar' an improved carrot variety, NIF conducted validation of the variety at Durgapura and also carried out biochemical profiling at Anand. Multilocation trials at farmers field were carried out in five states.

Architect Bimal Patel too conferred with Padma Shri:

CEPT University President and renowned architect of Ahmedabad Bimal Patel has been conferred Padma Shri. Patel has been recognised with the Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of architecture. Patel is known to build Sabarmati riverfront, Gujarat High court and many educational institutions in the city and outside the state.
