Attempts of National Students Union of India (NSUI) members, who allegedly tried to disrupt a seminar held at Bhavan’s College on Saturday for inviting filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri as the chief guest, went in vain as heavy police cover was deployed at the event. The members had reached the campus with roses to observe Gandhigiri.

A clash erupted after the police refused to let them enter the campus. NSUI, on Wednesday, had written to the authorities and sought cancellation of the event. They said it was unfair of the college to invite Agnihotri at the event because he had been named in the #MeToo movement by actor Tanushree Dutta.

Bhavan’s Sheth RA College of Arts and Commerce had organised a two-day national seminar on ‘Role of Cultural History in Formation of Society’ sponsored by Indian Council of Philosophical Research.

The members had warned the authorities for a massive protest if the event won’t be cancelled. However, no one from NSUI was seen near the campus as the seminar began on Saturday morning. “The event went smoothly, there was no question of NSUI members creating an issue. We had taken measures,” Neerja Gupta, Principal, Bhavan’s college said.

“#MeToo is a good movement, but it should not be misused. Taking the issue on Facebook will not solve the actual problem faced by women. I am against the corrupt Congress party and hence NSUI is protesting against me,”  Agnihotri said on the sidelines of the event.

CULTURE TOUCH

  • “Indian culture is the only culture which has continued without any disruption. While we are connected with the past, not as a burden, we continue to remain grounded in present,” said Kuldeep Chandra Agnihotri, VC, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, said.
