A complaint of cheating was lodged with the Shahibaug police station on Wednesday by a 41-year-old man after he was duped of Rs 12.5 lakh by three accused, including a woman.
The complaint was lodged by victim Mukesh Bagrecha, a resident of Shahibaug and owner of an auto parts shop in Maninagar. The incident took place in May.
He stated in his complaint that on May 1, at around 8am, when on his usual morning walk, he met two men identified as Udayraj, Ramesh and a woman. The accused stopped him and asked him if he was interested in buying diamonds for cheap. They said that their son was admitted to a hospital and were in urgent need of money. Mukesh refused and told them to contact a jeweller.
Next day morning, the accused met Mukesh again, and asked him for contacts of buyers. They even gave him two diamonds to verify. When the diamonds turned out to be real, on May 14, Mukesh bought 200 diamonds from the accused for Rs 12.5 lakh. But the very next day, Mukesh realized that all 200 diamonds were fake. When couldn't get through to the accused on their phones he lodged a complaint with the Shahibaug police.
