The Gujarat University has initiated an advanced PG diploma in Geoinformatics and Satellite Communication. The course is offered by the department of physics, electronics and space science, in collaboration with the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of ISRO and the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL).

The course involves a two-semester advanced PG diploma and many fields benefit from it, including town planning, development of navigation systems, automatic vehicle location systems, transportation planning and engineering. This advanced degree is also helpful in environmental modelling and analysis, telecommunications, agriculture and public health. Experienced people are also required for biodiversity management.

This course will impart training in various disciplines of geoinformatics such as remote sensing, geographic Information System (GIS), photogrammmetry and areas of tele-communication such as satellite communication, mobile communication, satellite navigation etc. The course has been designed to cater to the requirements of research, technology development and applications in the fields of geoinformatics and telecommunication.

The course consists of two semesters. In each semester, there are five theory papers, spanning about 36 lectures of one-hour duration each, and a major project. The first semester consists of papers like atmospheric physics, fundamentals of remote sensing, and basics and application of GIS. In this semester, the students will also be taught about microwave systems and satellite systems and orbits.

In the second semester, the students will be taught about satellite communication, satellite navigation, mobile communication, remote sensing applications and photogrammetry, besides having a project.

The projects, which are to be submitted one each in both semesters, could be carried out in institutions such as Space Applications Centre (SAC), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application and Geoinformatics (BISAG), Institute for Plasma research, GIS Industry, telecom Industry and any other universities. With an exposure to these projects, the students will get exposure, be able to work with good institutes, and interact with reputed professionals.

The students will be exposed to major research and operational institutes. All theory papers will carry 100 marks each, while the project will carry 500 marks. 30% marks will be awarded based on internal evaluation, through a written test and seminars and quizzes, while the remaining 70% will be on the basis of the examination conducted by the university.

Students who have done their post graduation in science or graduation in physics/electronics as the main subject, or those having done a BE or BTech from any university recognised by UGS or equivalent organisations, with a minimum of 50% marks, will be eligible to apply for this course. The total number of students will not exceed 15, and admissions will be merit-based.

The course is self-financed, and hence the fees will be Rs20,000 per semester, besides an examination fee of Rs750 and a caution deposit of Rs2,000. Students interested in applying for this course will be able to do so through the prospectus (inclusive of admission form) available at the department of physics, electronics and space sciences of the GU.

Students who complete this course will be able to find jobs in research in ISRO centres, the telecom industry, with the state government, remote sensing centres, remote sensing and GIS industry, universities and other R&D centres.

The course will also cater to those interested in satellite-based navigation systems such as Global Positioning System. Through this course, research in space and satellite-related courses will be enhanced and students will get exposure to the latest in the field, from the best in the field.
