WWE superstar and on-screen COO Triple H won the 2016 Royal Rumble last eliminating Dean Ambrose, at the Amway centre in Orlando, Florida on Monday morning.

Triple H, who had been seriously injured by then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion at the Survivor Series Pay Per View last November, came back to win the Rumble match and become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Roman Reigns, who is involved in a storyline feud with the McMahon family and Triple H, was eliminated by The Game. Triple H entered the match last at No 30, eliminating Bray Wyatt, Sheamus and Roman Reigns before finally throwing Reigns' friend Dean Ambrose over the top rope to win the Rumble for the second time.

Usually, the Royal Rumble winner from each year goes to Wrestlemania to face the champion. This year however, the rules were changed. The Royal Rumble winner would actually become the champion. The new stipulation had been added to disadvantage Roman Reigns, who also entered the match as the very first competitor. Subsequently, Triple H has begun his 14th reign with the title.

This is Triple H's second Rumble win. He won his first in 2002.

The other big name promoted before the Royal Rumble was Brock Lesnar, who lost the WWE World Title at Wrestlemania 31 last year despite not being pinned. Lesnar entered the 2016 event at No 23, eliminating four superstars including three of the Wyatt family. However, he was then attacked by all four members of the group and its leader Bray subsequently eliminated Lesnar.

Surprise entrants into the Rumble included Sami Zayn, who had been injured last year, and AJ Styles, best known for his 12-year tenure with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling. Styles' entry at No 3 was his debut in the WWE. He was eliminated by Kevin Owens.

A Roman Reigns-Triple H feud, a Brock Lesnar- Wyatt family feud and an AJ Styles-Kevin Owens feud looks very likely now heading into Wrestlemania 32 in Texas.
