When officers of the Mumbai Crime Branch asked dreaded gangster Bunty Pandey how he managed to get contact details of businessmen and other targets for extortion, his reply took the police by surprise.

He told the police that before parting ways with his mentor, Chhota Rajan, he had stolen the latter’s diary which had details about people from whom good sums of money could be extorted.

Pandey has claimed that he used the same diary for extortion.
Prakash Narayan Pandey, alias Bunty Pandey, one of the city’s most dreaded criminals, was detained in Hanoi in Vietnam and extradited to India last Wednesday. He has 34 serious criminal cases registered against him.

One of the questions which always arise during an extortionist’s interrogation is how he managed to get contact details of his targets. “When we grilled Pandey about this, he gave a shocking reply. He told us that, before parting ways with Rajan, he had stolen his diary which contained details of possible targets,” said one of Pandey’s interrogators.

However, the police do not believe Pandey’s claim, as they say every criminal tries to throw investigators off track by putting the blame on his associates.

“There has to be someone known to the gangster as well as his target. This person passes on crucial details about the victim to the gangsters for either some personal gain or money,” said another police official, requesting anonymity.

The official added that, after leaving the Rajan gang, Pandey was in touch with few of Rajan’s foot-soldiers and formed his own gang. “These foot-soldiers used to execute firings at his behest and get information about targets for him,” said the officer.

Extortion cases have come down drastically in the city in the past few years, the police claimed. “With Pandey’s arrest, we expect they will decline further,” said joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy.
