Bhargavi Jadhav, 26, died at Nair Hospital early on Saturday. Her family has blamed it on negligence by doctors, who were not there at the hospital to treat her when her condition deteriorated late on Friday night.

Last Wednesday, Bhargavi dropped a vessel of hot water at her residence. Water spilled on to her legs, and she was rushed to the hospital with 20% burns.

Rajesh, 28, the victim’s husband, said, “She had suffered burn injuries only on her legs. Her treatment was going on fine till Friday evening. In the last check-up she had at the ward, a doctor prescribed some antibiotics, and she consumed them after dinner.

“We went home, leaving behind my cousin and sister-in-law to take care of Bhargavi. Late in the night, she started having loose motions. Feeling very weak and dizzy, she told my cousin to call the on-duty doctor. He alerted the hospital staff, but there no doctor present at the hospital to attend to her. By the time a doctor came to check her, it was too late. She died early on Saturday.”

Rajesh said that his cousin, Prabhakar, had asked the hospital staff to call the doctor around 1am. But it was almost 5am when the doctor came.

“Around 3:30am, Prabhakar called me to tell about Bhargavi’s condition. I rushed to the hospital,” Rajesh said. “She told me that her tongue had dried up and she was having trouble speaking. Her blood pressure had plummeted, but there was no doctor to treat her till 5am.”

Prabhakar said, “We saw her dying, but could not do anything to help her. We kept asking for a doctor, but no one reached on time. It was around 7am on Saturday that a doctor pronounced her dead, saying that her injuries had got infected.”

Rajesh’s brother has written a letter to the Nair Hospital dean, Dr Ravi Rananvare, alleging that Bhargavi died only because there was no doctor at the hospital that night. He has urged the dean to take action. Rananvare has issued a letter, stating that an inquiry has been ordered, and strictest action would be taken against people found guilty of negligence. The inquiry report will be out by Thursday.

The Jadhav family has also filed a case with the police. Inspector Chandrakant Khanvilkar of the Agripada police station said, “We are waiting for the post-mortem report, and the report by the panel of doctors appointed by the dean to probe the case.”
