Maharashtra BJP president and number two in the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Cabinet, Chandrakant Patil on Friday stunned his party workers after he revealed that if the party offers him CM's post he will take it.

Patil, who is a close confidant of PM Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah, was, however, quite categorical in his statement that he had never staked claim nor aspired for any post in his career. "I have successfully fulfilled responsibilities bestowed on me by the party. I got all posts strictly on the basis of my performance. So if the party gives me the opportunity to be CM why should I leave it. I will take it,'' he said.

Interestingly, Patil reiterated that there was nothing wrong in Shiv Sena's demand for CM's post. On Shiv Sena's move to project youth leader Aaditya Thackeray as CM, Patil said the voters will decide whether Aditya has the ability to become CM. Patil's statement comes at a time when the CM Devendra Fadnavis has launched his month-long Maha Janadesh Yatra to showcase achievements of the government since 2014.

AIMING BIG

  • Patil has been at the forefront with Fadnavis to declare that BJP and Shiv Sena will sweep the coming Assembly poll and win 220 plus seats in the state

  • Patil, who comes from western Maharashtra, has played a key role with Fadnavis to provide reservation to the politically influential Maratha community

Fadnavis, in the state legislature in June, had announced that he would come back as the CM. Thereafter, at the party's state executive meeting took place on July 22 he declared that he won't be just the BJP CM but will be the CM of the entire alliance.

Patil, who comes from western Maharashtra, has played a key role with Fadnavis to provide reservation to the politically influential Maratha community in jobs and education under Socially and Educationally Backward Class category. His poll strategy worked for BJP's sterling performance especially in the western Maharashtra which used to be the stronghold of Congress and NCP.

Patil has been taking on NCP chief Sharad Pawar head-on as he even camped in Baramati for the defeat of Pawar's daughter and NCP nominee Supriya Sule in the Lok Sabha poll. Even though BJP candidate Kanchan Kul faced the defeat, Patil announced that his efforts to win Baramati seat will be further stepped up.
