Moments after inaugurating country's first digital gallery at Mumbai Central on Friday, union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal asked for a change in the way it looks. "It looks superb but as discussed these digital galleries should have three-dimension (3D) images and videos to attract commuters," he told rail officials during the inspection.

The videos are of over three hours and will feature the photographs and graphically enhanced images of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, its world heritage building along with black and white photos of the bygone era of Indian Railways. The videos also featured pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, his train travels and his struggle for independence.

The rail officials said that the whole idea is to showcase the country's rich rail heritage. "Some of the pictures are over 150 years old. Mumbai has a special place in the history of Indian Railways since the first train ran between Bombay's Bori Bunder station and Thane on 16 April 1853," said Goyal after the launch.

"22 digital screens across the country will showcase this historic project of Indian Railways called 'Rail Heritage Digitisation Project'. It has taken over two years of hard work, research and execution.

Whenever we look at the evolution of the transport system in India, all these rich traditions, history and culture will play an important role in understanding how the Indian Railways has evolved," said a railway official while explaining the project.
