Mumbai's BDD chawl redevelopment to create over 8,000 houses

The BDD Chawl of Worli will generate an additional 3,224 houses for the middle income groups and 1,772 houses for the higher income group.

The redevelopment of Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls at Worli, Naigaon and Parel which will generate 8,120 additional 2BHK and 3BHK houses will be sold by MHADA in lottery.

According to the state housing department data, apart from rehabilitation of the existing 15,593 tenants, the BDD Chawl of Worli will generate an additional 3,224 houses for the middle income groups and 1,772 houses for the higher income group. The NM Joshi Marg, Parel BDD chawl will create 728 houses for middle income group and 540 houses for higher income group. The Naigaon BDD chawl will generate an additional 1,408 houses for MIG and 448 for HIG.

Housing Minister Prakash Mehta told DNA that the redeveloped buildings of Naigaon BDD will be 23 storeyed while the saleable buildings will be 60 storeyed. NM Joshi, Parel redevelopment buildings will be 22 storeyed while saleable buildings will be 47 storeyed. “And, Worli BDD buildings will be 23 storyered and saleable buildings will be tallest with 66 storeys. The quality of the construction will be world-class. 

We want to make the redevelopment of BDD a model development. We are committed to provide the larger houses to existing tenants of BDD. We will also create more than 8,000 additional houses. These houses will help to bring down the skyrocketing property prices of south Mumbai,” Mehta said.

Milind Mhaiskar, CEO of MHADA, which is the nodal agency for the development of BDD, said that their redevelopment work is in full swing. “The existing tenant of BDD Worli will be shifted there. We have got enough space to accommodate the Worli chawl there itself while Parel and Naigaon chawls will be shifted soon to the transit camp. We recently heard all their grievances. We are very positive about this mega development,” Mhaiskar said.
