If the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is to be believed, there seems to be no solution for residents living near Kherwadi junction at Bandra (East), but to bear the stench from the loaded garbage compactors and tempo's that are parked in one of the lanes.

DNA on August 26 reported ('Why's BMC parking dumpsters in our neighbourhood in Bandra?) how local residents are up in arms against the civic body and have urged them to find a parking place for their compactors away from residential areas.

Speaking to DNA a senior BMC official said that the motor loader (ML) chowky is located close to where the vehicles are parked for the past 25 years. "We have no other place in the entire H-East ward where we can shift the ML chowky. And since the lane is near the chowky, the vehicles are parked over there to save time," said the official.

Several garbage compactors and smaller tempos are lined up along Ram Mandir lane, located off the Kherwadi junction, which not only has several residential buildings but also a BMC maternity hospital and a popular temple.

"Time and again we have complained about the issue. They not only make the whole lane dirty and unhygienic, the leachate discharged from the compactors spills onto the road leaves an unbearable stink at the entry of the lane," shared a resident from Asara building, which is worst-affected owing to its location right at the mouth of the lane where these compactors are parked.

Menace of crows and rats which pick garbage off tempos and drop off anywhere has increased

Adding to residents' annoyance is the increased menace of crows and rats in the lane which pick garbage off the tempos and compactors and drop off anywhere and everywhere. The nuisance is exacerbated when the footpaths blocked off by these stationary compactors are used by auto and cab drivers to urinate.

Speaking about the menace, local councilor Haji Halim Khan said, "BMC should find a solution. I will write to MMRDA and BMC commissioner seeking an alternate place for parking these vehicles including the space below the Kherwadi flyover, which is right opposite the place where tempos and compactors are parked now," he said.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Ashok Khairnar (H-East ward) said, "It's true that we don't have any other alternate space so I have asked my staff to ensure that all leachate that drops off from the compactors has to be cleaned along with any garbage that falls off the compactors accidentally," he said.
