Ready to face state polls in October after facing a resounding defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, funds seem to be the party's overarching concern.

A senior Congress leader informed that the Congress party managed to get funds during the Lok Sabha polls in the hope that it will either come to power on its own or with the support of regional parties.

"Big corporates, developers and investors group voluntarily offered election funding to us. Therefore, we could make buzz and put some dignified fight against the BJP. However, the same donors have now tightened their purse strings. While on the other hand the Sena- BJP is plush with funds. It is a big challenge for us to mobilize resources," a highly placed Congress party source informed.

Sources said that the party was going through a bad phase just ahead of the state polls. "Maharashtra Congress needs at least Rs. 30 to 50 lakh to run its monthly affairs. We have engaged professionals who are highly paid but who contribute greatly to social media and other minutiae of the campaign. However, we have a shortage of funds to even retain them. Thorat agreed only after much insistence from the seniors of the party," a source, said.

"Thorat was a minister but never worked in a leadership role. If we don't provide funds then who will fight on a Congress ticket? We cannot match the resources of BJP and Shiv Sena. Things are not that bright for the party in the state polls," said a senior Congress leader requesting anonymity.

While the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President, Balasaheb Thorat didn't comment about the development, it is believed that he was reluctant to take reigns of the party precisely due to pressing financial issues.
