Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) YV Chandrachud passed away on Monday morning at Bombay Hospital. Known in the legal circle as the most humane CJI, he succumbed to a heart attack just two days after celebrating his 88th birthday on July 12. He is survived by his wife Prabha, a daughter and son Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud of the Bombay High Court.

Chandrachud was the longest-serving CJI, from 1978 till his retirement in 1985.
“On my first day to court, my father had introduced me to Justice Chandrachud who was then a public prosecutor. My father had said that this young man will be the Chief Justice of India one day,” said retired Supreme Court judge BN Shrikrishna, remembering Chandrachud as a thorough gentleman and a scholar.

Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said, “Justice Chandrachud was an erudite and learned man. He made his mark as a public prosecutor, a judge of the Bombay High Court and eventually as the Chief Justice of India. He will be remembered for a long time in the field of jurisprudence.”

He had dinner with his son on his birthday on Saturday and was admitted to the hospital a day later with complaint of chest pain.

Chandrachud was given a state honour, before his family proceeded to the Chandanwadi crematorium to perform the last rites. Chief justice Swatanter Kumar and other judges of the Bombay High Court and members of the bar paid their last respects at his Nariman Point residence.

President of the Bombay Bar Association and senior advocate RA Dada said, “He was a man of impeccable manners and had the greatest courtesy towards the bar. He could draw the best out of any lawyer who argued before him.”
