Holi’s upon us tomorrow and while most of the dry colours are safe and do not cause any long term damage, try to avoid the ones with glitter, which contain silica particles and can abrade your skin.

Use water-soluble colours this Holi and stay away from the so-called permanent colours. Go for home-made natural, chemical-free colours.

Sangeeta Amladi,
Head Medical Services, Kaya Skin Clinic advises:

“The chemicals used in colours can make your skin susceptible to allergic dermatitis. Apply coconut oil or a moisturiser to your body prior to venturing out. If your skin feels irritable, splash water and then re-apply a moisturiser. To protect your skin from dryness, caused by these colours, make sure you use a cleanser.”

Sharmili Rajput,
Marketing Director,
Oriflame India, advises:
“To remove the Holi colours, first wash with cold water. Rub some lemon wedges over the skin, and then wash it off. Use a soft cleanser or a homemade milk and besan scrub to wash your skin. Scrub the affected areas and lips for a few minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid very hot water as it causes dryness. Apply moisturiser immediately after the bath as the skin gets dehydrated. Later, apply a mixture of glycerin, sea salt and a few drops of aroma oil or almond oil on the skin to counter any negative effects of chemicals.”

Mohan Thomas, Sr Cosmetic surgeon, Breach Candy Hospital, advises:
“It is important to remove colour and replenish and rejuvenate the skin by using a paste of soyabean flour or besan with milk. A mixture of sea salt, glycerine and a few drops of aroma oil have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effect and can take care of the bad effects of chemical colours.”

Abhijit Desai, Makeover Expert and MD, Evolve Med spa advises:
“Harmful colours contacting your skin causes itching, rashes and irritation in the area of contact. Hence, apply petroleum jelly, body oil or edible oil on exposed parts to prevent colours from coming in contact with your skin. If you get rashes, use a mild cream like Elocon or Flutivate and if it doesn’t subside then visit the dermatologist.”
