Christmas is just around the corner and what better way to usher in the spirit of the season than with colour? “Red and white instantly conjure up images of Christmas festivities and are easy to incorporate,” says Sandhya Gorthi, Owner, Sanctum Store.

For just a hint of Christmas
There are subtle ways to set the Christmas mood at home. “As the Christmas colours will be incorporated only for the season, its best to use them in soft furnishings like discerning curtains, elegant throws and classic cushion covers,” advices Asim Merchant, Designer and Partner at Red, Blue & Yellow.

In a similar vein, Rohina Anand Khira of AA Living, believes that a good way to integrate Christmas-coloured elements in your decor would be through small accessories. “White candle stands with red candles would be a subtle colour pop for your centrepiece. Alternatively, a red throw on your white couch adds instant Christmas cheer!” she says. Style your table with a white tablecloth, red and white plates, white napkins tied with thick red ribbons, candy sticks for the centre display…you get the drift! Red and white blooms or poinsettias are a great way to brighten up the room.

“Dish out Christmas goodies in a red and white polka-dotted box or use a red bucket as a caddy for candy cane. Hanging fairy lights with snowflake cutouts from a corner will do wonders for that Christmas glow,” advices Sandhya, highlighting how little knick-knacks can make a big difference. Little red and white touches go a long way. “Christmas is all about lights, and a few candles around the room will make the place look heavenly,” shares Vandana Khosla, Creative Director, Elvy. Festive lanterns and candles painted in red and white can be clustered together. If your red and white candles are scented, all the merrier!

For a bit of Christmas all year round
If Christmas décor is a big thing in your home, it would be wise to spend on versatile products that could be used year after year. “Delicate furnishings like red and white curtains, throws and cushions are worth investing in for annual use. You could also invest in a white Christmas tree and dress it up with red ornaments. Highlighting a wall with deep-red paint is another option worth considering,” says Asim.

Wallpapers are a fun and low-hassle way of changing the look of an entire room; choose a wallpaper that could be a great backdrop for Christmas decorations during the season and look equally good all year round. “Creating a natural look by using designs like wood, bricks and stones gives an authentic and festive feel, during this time of the year. There are great options in Christmas colours as well,” says Karan Sharma, Director, Marshalls.

“If your Christmas theme is based on colours and floral designs, they can remain relevant for years. Christmas-themed prints can pose a problem, except during Christmas. It's better to play it safe and use red and white in varied designs,” he says.

So, this Christmas, opt for a colour scheme that is traditional, but unrestrictive. No matter how big your home, deck up your rooms in red and white this season!
